SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA
by Becky Albertalli
HarperCollins (2015)

16-year old Simon is blackmailed into playing matchmaker for his classmate Martin, or else Martin will out him and his secret penpal crush to the whole school. Through the entire novel, Simon is kept guessing about who his closeted secret crush is.  As Simon chooses to share his secret with select few, feathers get ruffled, and the situation a bit tricky and sticky thanks to Martin, involving Simon’s close friends, Abby and Leah and Nick.

The setting is typical high school, but the theatre clique aspect is fun. I honestly didn’t guess who Simon’s crush was, so it was fun to go along for the ride with this group of friends. Some great lessons, some nice messages about race and gender, and a very satisfying ending.
