“Charlie, we accept the love we think we deserve.” (p. 24)

Yeah. That line jumped out at me in the movie as well. The movie really won me over. I loved it, so I had to read the book.

Revealing Charlie’s story in letter format is refreshing, and really submerged me into Charlie’s very unique and appealing voice and world. I liked him and felt for him immediately. His perspective on the world may seem innocent and simple at first, but the reader soon realizes the honesty and truth in his words.

There’s a lot of issues buried in here. The book doesn’t hit you over the head with them. Great slice of high school life. I also loved the journey Charlie went on with his English teacher… the books he found to parallel his own development. I also really loved how important music was to the telling of the story. Not something most authors attempt very often. This lent an authentic weight and made it feel so much more real.

Highly recommend. Even though I’m late to this party. 🙂
