IF I TOLD YOU SO

Sweet summer coming-of-age. This novel captured a familiar feeling for me that I can only liken to 80’s movies about East Coast summer resort towns and young hopeful love. It also reminds me of a movie called THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN, as it conjures similar feelings if not situations.

16 year old Sean goes to work at an ice cream shop at the summer lake community where he lives -the shop is owned and run by a friendly, sassy lesbian named Rene who becomes a source of support. Sean meets Becky, a savvy (on vacation) quirky New York City Jewish girl, and embarks on an eye-opening summer of discovery, falling for a boy who bewitches and confuses him. It’s love found, lost, and found again.

Lots of fun movie references and a real sense of hope and discovery for Sean. Made me wish I had a friend like Becky when I was his age. And maybe a friend like Matt, too. Fun read.
